Firefighters tackle blaze as former school goes up in flames

A derelict school is on fire in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside. Fire crews were called to the scene on Winwick Road shortly before 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 18.

Firefighters Respond to Blaze at Derelict School

Pictures from eyewitnesses show plumes of smoke rising above trees and multiple fire engines responding to the incident. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service stated that crews were alerted at 6:59 p.m. and arrived on scene at 7:07 p.m., with three fire engines and an aerial appliance in attendance.

Firefighters found a two-story brick building engulfed in flames. Water supplies were established, and surrounding buildings were checked to ensure the fire had not spread. Crews are currently fighting the fire with hose reel jets and main branch hoses.

The incident is ongoing. Local residents have been advised by firefighters to keep their windows and doors closed.
