Gobi Desert Fossil Rewrites Mammal Family Tree and Zhelestid Taxonomy

A rabbit-shaped fossil discovered in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert has settled a long-running scientific argument regarding zhelestids, an extinct group of mammals whose classification has puzzled paleontologists for decades. For most of the last 40 years, researchers had to rely exclusively on scattered teeth and broken jaw pieces to study the group. Those rounded teeth consistently pointed to the wrong branch of the mammal family tree, leading some scientists to propose that zhelestids were an early branch of hoofed, plant-eating mammals. Others suggested they were among the earliest placental mammals, the major group that today includes humans, dogs, and whales.

New Fossil Rewrites Zhelestid Taxonomy and Mammal Evolution

The new specimen, which includes a skull and partial hind limb, was found by Andres Giallombardo in 2004 while he was a graduate student on a museum-sponsored expedition. Giallombardo described the find as the thrill of a career to find a new species so completely preserved that also solves a longstanding scientific problem. The research team included scientists from the American Museum of Natural History, Stony Brook University, the University of Arizona, and Arcadia University.

This anatomical evidence challenges genetic and molecular clock studies of living animals, which have long suggested that placental mammals originated early enough to have lived alongside dinosaurs. Stony Brook University Professor Maureen O’Leary referenced French naturalist Georges Cuvier, who famously argued that a single tooth could allow scientists to predict the anatomy of an entire animal. However, the new discovery demonstrates that isolated teeth can be misleading. Paul Velazco, a comparative biologist at Arcadia University and study coauthor, stated that molecular models based on living animals can predict the past, but fossils provide the evidence needed to test those predictions.

Researchers concluded that the distinctive rounded teeth seen in zhelestids—commonly associated with plant-eating mammals—represent a case of convergent evolution, where unrelated animals adapt to similar lifestyles and develop comparable traits.

Discovery of Ravjaa ishii Expands Zhelestid Distribution

In a separate discovery announced from the Gobi Desert, an international team of paleontologists unearthed a mouse-sized zhelestid species named Ravjaa ishii in the Baynshiree Formation. Unearthed during a joint 2019 expedition by researchers from the Okayama University of Science and the Institute of Paleontology and Geology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, the fossil consists of a 1-centimeter jaw fragment preserving the end of a premolar and three molars.

This find marks the first time zhelestid fossils have been discovered in Mongolia and the first zhelestid specimen recovered from the Baynshiree Formation. Previously, scientists believed zhelestids inhabited mainly coastal regions, but the discovery indicates these mammals also evolved far inland. Mototaka Saneyoshi of the Okayama University of Science described the find by saying that finding such a tiny fossil in the vast expanse of the Gobi Desert feels like a gift… it’s nothing short of miraculous.
