Outlets such as OnStageBlog highlighted content in which Segers posted material critical of pronoun usage and expressed opposition to transgender athletes participating in women’s sports. Segers’ YouTube channel featured videos with titles including TRANS FAIRNESS?, HE… I MEAN SHE, BROKE THE RECORD, and “NO MORE TRANS?”

As the criticism intensified online, Segers made his Instagram account private and removed or made private the controversial videos on his YouTube channel, though reshared copies remained traceable across theater blogs and social media platforms. Segers did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding his departure from the production.

The Joint Departure Agreement and Production Response

On August 2, 2026, just days after the initial casting reveal, the production released a joint statement confirming that Segers would no longer join the Broadway cast.

“The producers of Hadestown and Geno Segers have mutually agreed that Mr. Segers will no longer join the Broadway production. Additional casting will be announced shortly.”
