Apple’s long-awaited artificial intelligence features are finally heading to China this December, resolving two years of regulatory limbo for the tech giant’s second-largest market. The rollout lands alongside the iOS 27.3 update, backed by a strategic alliance with Alibaba Group Holding, according to a statement released on Saturday.
Apple Partners with Alibaba for December Rollout
The initial deployment introduces roughly 18 distinct Apple Intelligence capabilities to Chinese users. Development testing kicks off with an open beta on November 4, 2026, ahead of the public release in December. To clear local regulatory hurdles, Apple partnered with Alibaba Group Holding to integrate the Qwen large language model directly into core system features like Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence, Global Times reported.
This integration bridges a crucial gap for the Cupertino-based company, enabling local users to tap into advanced text and image understanding. Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu emphasized the scope of the collaboration in a public statement: Qwen will draw on Alibaba’s deep AI capabilities to integrate deeply into the various experiences of Apple’s ecosystem, and together bring brand-new intelligent services to Apple users in China,
as noted by Global Times.
New AI Tools Require Recent iPhone Models
The first wave of software updates covers a broad spectrum of daily productivity and communication tasks. Users will gain access to live translation across phone calls, messages, and FaceTime, alongside powerful text rewriting, proofreading, and summarization tools. Visual Intelligence capabilities will operate via camera controls, supported by features like Clean Up, Genmoji, and natural-language search in Photos, according to DigitBin.
Hardware compatibility restricts these tools to specific recent models. Supported devices include the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 and subsequent models, alongside the iPhone Air and iPhone Duo. The device and Siri languages must be set explicitly to English or Simplified Chinese, and the user's Apple account country must match the region, DigitBin reported.

Alibaba Will Not Use User Data for Training
Data privacy remains a core component of the localized architecture. Apple explicitly requests user consent before routing any document, image, or query to Alibaba’s Qwen model, according to a statement published on Alibaba’s WeChat account on Saturday. Alibaba confirmed that user queries and subsequent generated replies will not be utilized to train its underlying artificial intelligence models.
This deployment follows successful regulatory procedures. The Qwen integration stands among seven on-device generative AI services that have completed formal regulatory filing procedures inside China, according to Global Times. While the upcoming iOS 27.3 update brings these tools to supported iPhones, broader Siri AI work announced at WWDC 2026 remains absent from this initial release, and iPad and Mac devices must wait for pending approvals, DigitBin noted.
