Google Gemini Reaches 950 Million Monthly Active Users

Google’s artificial intelligence application, Gemini, has reached 950 million monthly active users, according to Alphabet’s financial report for the second quarter of 2026. This figure represents an increase of 200 million users, or nearly 27%, since February, when the company reported more than 750 million monthly active users.

The rapid growth, as noted by Mezha, has brought the service close to the 1 billion user threshold, positioning it near the audience size of ChatGPT. While the user base has expanded, Google has not disclosed the number of paying subscribers or the frequency of individual user interactions, which limits the ability to assess overall engagement levels.

Infrastructure and Enterprise Adoption

The technical demands on Google’s AI models have scaled alongside the user growth. Gemini models are currently processing 22 billion API tokens per minute, a significant increase from the 10 billion tokens per minute recorded at the end of 2025.

Corporate adoption remains a key pillar of this expansion. According to Pravdatutnews, Gemini Enterprise is now utilized by nearly 90% of companies listed in the Fortune 100. This enterprise demand contributed to the growth of Google Cloud, which saw its revenue increase by 82% to $24.8 billion in the second quarter. Overall, Alphabet reported a 24% year-over-year revenue increase, reaching $119.8 billion for the quarter.

Product Evolution and New Models

Google continues to iterate on its AI lineup, recently introducing new models including Gemini 3.6 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, and Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber. The company claims the 3.6 Flash model is faster at programming tasks, consumes fewer tokens, and is more cost-effective to operate. While the flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro launch remains delayed, CEO Sundar LIGA reported that early development work on Gemini 4 has already commenced.

Additionally, the company has expanded the platform’s accessibility through initiatives such as the launch of Gemini Spark for Mac users and the rebranding of NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook.

Ongoing Challenges and User Comparisons

Despite the rapid growth, some users continue to prioritize ChatGPT due to perceived advantages in usability and response quality. Feedback indicates that Gemini faces specific functional hurdles:

Google's AI Overviews Reach 2 Billion Monthly Users
  • Complex Instruction Handling: Users have reported that Gemini occasionally ignores parts of long or complex prompts, a limitation observed in both standard chats and Gemini Notebook.
  • Task Planning: The platform’s task-scheduling feature has been described as unreliable, with some users unable to execute or restart tasks despite manual attempts.
  • Search and Context: While Gemini is integrated into the Android ecosystem, some users find that ChatGPT provides more consistent summaries of information during web searches.
  • Image Generation: Although Gemini has seen improvements in image creation via its Nano Banana technology, users note limitations in color accuracy and editing compared to competing models.

These operational inconsistencies suggest that while Gemini has achieved significant scale, the platform remains in a phase of active refinement. Concerns regarding trust and the lack of a long-term, accumulated interaction history—which some users have built over years with other services—remain barriers to a full transition for a portion of the user base.
