XFG ‘American Covid’ Strain: Symptoms to Watch Out For in Ireland

The XFG Covid-19 subvariant now accounts for 55% of all coronavirus cases in Ireland, driving a winter surge that brings hundreds of new infections and dozens of hospitalisations each week, the Irish Mirror reported.

Symptoms and Eye Infections Linked to the Stratus Variant

As winter infections climb, pharmacists are warning the public to watch out for less typical indicators of the virus. Noel Wicks, an adviser to GoldenEye, cautioned that Conjunctivitis can be the first and/or the only symptom of COVID, with clinical studies indicating it appears in up to 14% of those who test positive.

A meta-analysis of 6,308 individuals found eye symptoms in approximately 11% of Covid patients, with conjunctivitis representing 88.8% of those cases. Wicks noted that winter conditions create a perfect storm for conjunctivitis. Explaining the mechanics of ocular infection, Mr Wicks added: The COVID virus can get into several body organs including the throat and lungs, as well as the eye’s surface and eyelids. When a droplet containing the virus lands on the surface of the eye, the virus likely travels from the eye surface into the internal cavity of the eye reaching the retina at the back of the eye.

Early physical signs include the whites of the eyes turning pink, alongside gritty or itchy sensations and a white or yellow discharge. Medical specialists reassure the public that the XFG strain, also known as Stratus, does not appear to cause more severe illness than prior variants. However, its genetic changes may increase transmission rates and produce distinct symptoms like a scratchy throat.

Household Cleanliness and Transmission Risks Across Regions

While the XFG strain dominates clinical reports in Ireland after first being detected in January 2025, similar pressures are visible elsewhere. In the UK, data from the UK Health Security Agency showed positive test rates reaching roughly 7% in September, accompanied by a 50% jump in hospital admissions over the same timeframe, according to Country Living Magazine.
