Hertfordshire police have reopened an investigation into allegations of rape and sexual assault against Andrew Tate, a self-professed misogynist, following scrutiny of its initial handling of the claims. The reinvestigation comes after the Independent Office for Police Conduct began examining whether a detective constable could face misconduct proceedings for alleged failures in the original investigations conducted in 2014 and 2015.
Andrew Tate Investigation Reopened
The police force stated its commitment to ensuring allegations of this nature are “properly, thoroughly and fully investigated, no matter how long ago they occurred.” Three women initially made serious allegations against Tate, but the case was closed in 2019 after a four-year investigation.
The three alleged victims released a joint statement saying the reopening of the investigation was “long overdue.” They stated they have “never stopped our search for justice following what we believe was the police’s failure to adequately investigate what happened between 2013 and 2015” and hope the past mistakes will be corrected, leading to Tate facing criminal justice.
In September of last year, the Crown Prosecution Service determined the legal threshold for criminal charges had not been met. However, the three women, along with a fourth woman, have pursued their claims in the high court, with a civil trial scheduled for June.
Tate denies all allegations against him, and his lawyers have previously dismissed the claims as false, asserting the women “were not controlled and did not behave as though they were controlled” by him.
Matthew Jury, managing partner at McCue Jury & Partners, representing the alleged victims, said, “These brave women deserve recognition for their relentless and prolonged struggle to ensure Andrew Tate faces justice.” He added that evidence suggests the initial investigation was not properly managed when the women first approached the police over a decade ago and expressed hope for a thorough investigation this time.
