Summer television is about to get a whole lot sandier. The BBC has officially pulled back the curtain on its newest reality competition, setting up an intense battle of art, engineering, and raw timing against the Scottish coastline. Seven competing pairs, each pairing an experienced professional sand sculptor with a complete novice, must transform tonnes of sand into towering, intricate themed creations before the natural clock runs out.

The format relies entirely on real-world jeopardy. With only six hours on the clock, contestants face the constant threat of collapsing structures and shifting weather as the tide creeps toward their hard work. It is a high-stakes outdoor challenge where the environment itself serves as the ultimate elimination judge.

West Sands Beach Set as the Ultimate Backdrop for St Andrews Sandcastles

The production takes over West Sands Beach in St Andrews, a location internationally famous for golf, but now poised to host giant temporary monuments. People know St Andrews as the Home of Golf, according to Tern Television Creative Director David Marshall. He noted that the company believes it is time the area became known for giant sandcastles as well, describing the series as a funny, feel-good format.

The competing contestants bring a diverse array of everyday skills to the beach. The lineup of enthusiastic newbies feature a leather craftsman, cake decorator, plasterer, stationery designer, carpenter, art teacher and fine art student, all testing whether their artistic or manual trades can translate to monumental sand works.

Guiding viewers through the chaos is host BBC, best known for providing the witty narration on Love Island since 2015 as well as handling the American edition since 2022. Stirling keeps an eye on the ticking clock while peppering the episode with signature humor.

Rather than just standing by, Stirling actively manages the race tempo. As the tide edges closer to the completed or half-finished sculptures, he waves a yellow flag to mark the halfway point, followed by a red flag when only ten minutes remain on the clock.

Once the red flag drops and the waves claim the temporary artwork, an expert panel decides who stays and who leaves the beach. The judging lineup features acclaimed artist and sculptor BBC alongside internationally renowned sand sculptor BBC.

Together, the judges evaluate each team based on strict artistic criteria. They hunt for outstanding technical execution, imaginative storytelling, and the all-important visual wow factor before the rising water washes the masterpieces away permanently.

At the end of every challenge, one pair earns the title of Sand Champions while another team is eliminated. After six epic builds, the competition narrows down to a single pair crowned as the first-ever champions.

The UK version is produced by Tern, a Zinc Media Company, with backing from Screen Scotland.
