Indian Railways Tests Solar-Assisted Passenger Coach in Prayagraj

The North Central Railway deployed the solar-assisted coach in its Prayagraj division to curb carbon emissions and reduce reliance on conventional electrical grids.

Rooftop Photovoltaic Panels and 7 kWp Generation Capacity

The defining feature of the newly developed carriage is the installation of high-efficiency photovoltaic panels across its roof.

According to reporting from the Prayagraj division, the system is capable of generating approximately 7 kWp of electricity. This solar output feeds directly into the train’s onboard battery bank, ensuring a steady supply of energy for interior amenities.

Powering Amenities While Parked or in Transit

Traditional rail coaches rely heavily on axle-driven alternators that only generate electricity when the wheels are actively turning.

This rooftop setup captures energy even when the train is standing completely still. The harvested power is continuously stored to run low-consumption equipment, including LED lighting, overhead fans, and passenger mobile charging sockets.

Integration with Existing Electrical Architecture

Rather than overhauling or replacing the pre-existing electrical architecture of the rolling stock, the new solar array is engineered to function alongside current systems.

The solar generation works in tandem with traditional setups to ease the strain on onboard batteries and provide more consistent voltage distribution throughout the compartment.

Broader Push Toward National Environmental Sustainability

The initiative follows recent deployments of hydrogen-powered train technology as part of a broader push toward environmental sustainability across the national network.

If the current trial proves successful, the railway administration plans to scale the installation of rooftop solar panels across passenger coaches nationwide.
