Global aviation pressures are reshaping network strategies for major carriers. IndiGo announced a significant strategic shift to conclude its wide-body operations, bringing an early close to an ambitious long-haul experiment launched just last year. The decision arrives as the industry grapples with compounding operational hurdles.
The Unraveling of the Norse Atlantic Airways Damp Lease
Earlier in 2025, the Gurgaon-based airline entered into a damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways involving six Boeing 787-9 aircraft. That partnership was designed to build operational experience on long-haul routes and prepare the carrier for the future introduction of its own Airbus A350 fleet, allowing IndiGo to establish services into European markets like the United Kingdom.
Operating conditions shifted rapidly following the initial announcement. Rising fuel prices, currency pressures, and airspace restrictions combined to escalate operating costs, eroding route profitability and scheduling continuity.
Route Adjustments and Temporary Suspensions at London Heathrow
The operational pullback directly affects international itineraries. Flights currently operating between Mumbai and Amsterdam using the leased Boeing 787-9 equipment will transition to Airbus A321XLR aircraft starting October 25, 2026. At the same time, the carrier is temporarily halting its service to London Heathrow Airport.
That suspension will remain in place until IndiGo receives direct deliveries of its ordered Airbus A350-900 aircraft. For passengers holding bookings on affected routes, the airline stated it is working directly with customers to provide alternative travel arrangements or applicable refunds.
Strategic Focus and Long-Term Market Ambitions
Company leadership emphasized that the adjustment reflects immediate macroeconomic and geopolitical realities rather than a retreat from international ambitions. Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President of Planning and Revenue Management at IndiGo, addressed the broader operational climate.

Even as wide-body flights pause, the airline maintains its commitment to expanding its global footprint in key medium- and long-haul markets as it enters the next phase of its corporate growth.
