Indonesia will terminate all diesel imports by July 1, 2026, coinciding with the national rollout of the B50 biodiesel program, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced.
- Import Deadline: July 1, 2026.
- Primary Driver: Implementation of palm oil-based B50 biodiesel.
- Expansion: Pilot development of palm oil-based gasoline via PTPN IV.
Speaking at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) in Surabaya on Sunday, April 19, 2026, Amran stated that the transition to B50 will allow the country to cease imports and leverage palm oil as a primary alternative fuel source to bolster national energy independence.
Diversification of Palm Oil Energy
The Minister noted that the potential of palm oil extends beyond diesel, with rapid developments currently underway to produce gasoline and ethanol.
The government is finalizing a partnership with PT Perkebunan Nusantara IV (PTPN IV) to develop palm oil-based gasoline on a pilot scale. If the pilot is successful, the government plans to expand production to an industrial scale.
Investment in Electric Agriculture
During his visit to ITS, Amran inspected several technological innovations, including electric tractors. The Ministry of Agriculture has ordered 10 units of these tractors for field testing.
Amran highlighted the efficiency of the machines, noting that they utilize electricity rather than conventional diesel and produce costs at half the usual rate.
The announcement was made during the Minister’s keynote address at the 133rd graduation ceremony for doctoral, master’s, and engineering professional programs at Grha ITS.
