Indonesian students in the United States have expressed hope that President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to Washington will result in benefits for Indonesian citizens as the nation navigates a period of global uncertainty.

Prabowo’s Visit and Student Expectations

Axel Hutapea, president of the Indonesian Students Association in the United States (Permias), acknowledged the multiple challenges facing Prabowo’s leadership in the current international climate. “At a moment like this, the president is confronted with difficult decisions,” Hutapea said Tuesday, adding his confidence in Prabowo’s ability to act wisely.

Permias believes Prabowo can deliver positive change for Indonesia through effective policies. Hutapea stated, “We believe in the president’s ability to deliver the best for Indonesia through policies that have positive and real impacts for all citizens.”

The association hopes decisions made during the visit will prioritize national interests and public welfare, while also urging caution. “Whatever decisions are taken must serve the nation’s good and public prosperity. This visit to Washington through the end of the week must bring concrete, positive impacts for Indonesians,” Hutapea added.

Priorities for Indonesian Students

Indonesian students in the U.S. are also hoping for increased government attention to security, protection, and employment opportunities. These priorities align with Permias’ focus on supporting Indonesian citizens in the United States and fostering the development of national research.

Hutapea expressed a desire for Prabowo to meet with Permias to discuss issues affecting Indonesian students in America. “We hope the president is granted good health and wisdom in leading the country, and that students and the diaspora remain central in policymaking,” he said.

Presidential Schedule

Prabowo arrived in Washington on Tuesday at approximately 12 p.m. local time, landing at Joint Base Andrews in Prince George’s County, Maryland, aboard a Garuda Indonesia aircraft. His schedule includes meetings with U.S. business leaders on Wednesday, attendance at the inaugural Gaza Board of Peace summit on Thursday, and bilateral talks with President Donald Trump, with plans to sign a reciprocal trade agreement that has been under negotiation since 2025.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya and Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia accompanied Prabowo on the flight from Jakarta.
