Indonesian authorities have uncovered a mephedrone drug laboratory in Gianyar, Bali, allegedly operated by Russian nationals. Two individuals, identified as N.T./K.S. and S.T., were arrested in connection with the operation, which resulted in the seizure of 7.3 kilograms of the synthetic drug.
Mephedrone Laboratory Discovered in Bali
The arrests took place on March 5 at approximately 11:45 p.m. following a joint investigation by Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Customs and Excise, and Immigration authorities that began in January, according to BNN head Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto.
Both suspects have been residing in Indonesia since January 2026. Authorities suspect they were actively involved in the production and distribution of mephedrone, a synthetic party drug.
BNN Acting Deputy for Eradication Brigadier General Roy Hardi Siahaan stated this is the first time authorities have discovered a mephedrone production laboratory of this scale in Indonesia. Previously, only small quantities of the drug had been detected.
The seized drugs included both liquid solution and crystalline powder forms, ready for distribution. Investigators also confiscated various chemicals and laboratory equipment used in the manufacturing process, including digital scales, respirator masks, glass flasks, and magnetic stirrers.
Initial investigations revealed that suspect N.T. had studied biology in Russia, a background believed to have been utilized in the drug’s production. Suspect S.T. previously served in the Russian military’s intelligence division but reportedly left due to health reasons.
Authorities believe the international syndicate employed a sophisticated method of operation, renting multiple villas in Bali to conceal their illegal activities. Approximately 644 grams of solid mephedrone and 7,250 milliliters of liquid solution were confiscated, totaling around 7.9 kilograms in gross weight.
