President Donald Trump stated he is not yet prepared to reach a deal with Iran to end the ongoing conflict, while also reiterating calls for international assistance in securing the Strait of Hormuz. Iran, in turn, has warned it could target ports in the United Arab Emirates following U.S. strikes on a key Iranian oil export island.
Strait of Hormuz Security
Trump expressed hope that nations including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom will contribute warships to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Neither Beijing nor London have confirmed their participation as of yet. U.S. gas prices have increased by 23% since the start of the conflict, according to AAA.
No Deal with Iran
Trump indicated he is not ready for a deal with Iran “because the terms are not good enough yet,” adding the U.S. may strike Iran’s Kharg Island “a few more times just for fun.” He also questioned the status of Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, noting he hasn’t been seen in public.
