Iran Seizes 2 Ships, Attacks Vessel in Strait of Hormuz

Iranian forces targeted three container ships in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, seizing two vessels and firing upon others during a period of heightened conflict in the Middle East.

  • Two container ships, the MSC-Francesca and the Epaminondas, were seized and directed to Iranian waters.
  • A Liberian-flagged vessel sustained heavy damage to its bridge after being fired upon off the coast of Oman.
  • The incidents occur amid an Iranian blockade imposed following U.S. and Israeli strikes on February 28.

Seizures in the Strait of Hormuz

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that its naval forces identified and stopped two “violating ships” attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels, identified as the MSC-Francesca and the Epaminondas, were seized and directed to the Iranian coast.

Iranian authorities alleged the MSC-Francesca has links to Israel. The Epaminondas was accused of lacking necessary permits and tampering with its navigation systems.

Attacks on Commercial Vessels

In a separate encounter 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman, an IRGC gunboat fired upon a Liberian-flagged container ship. The attack caused heavy damage to the vessel’s bridge, though all crew members remained safe and no environmental impact was reported.

The vessel had previously been informed that it had permission to transit the Strait of Hormuz, though Iranian armed forces claimed the ship ignored warnings.

Additionally, a Panama-flagged containership named the Euphoria was fired upon while transiting outbound of the strait, eight nautical miles west of Iran. While the ship was briefly stopped in the water, it later continued its voyage toward Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Regional Conflict and Blockades

Shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz has been heavily restricted by Iran since the outbreak of war on February 28, triggered by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian territory.

The U.S. military is currently enforcing a counter-blockade of Iranian ports. Amid these tensions, President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the truce between the two countries would be extended.
