Iran-US Diplomacy Ends: Rising Tensions & Contact Cut

Direct contact between senior officials from the United States and Iran has been suspended as tensions rise between the two countries, effectively halting diplomatic efforts.

US-Iran Communications Breakdown

Communications between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US special envoy Steve Wittkof have been suspended, a senior Iranian official said Wednesday.

The development comes amid threats from President Donald Trump to intervene as Iran responds to ongoing protests. Tehran has stated it will retaliate against US military bases in the region if attacked.

Over the past year, the US, along with European allies, had been attempting to revive diplomatic discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program. However, the Iranian official indicated that escalating tensions have eliminated any possibility of progress.

The US threats are undermining diplomatic efforts, the official said, adding that potential meetings between the two officials aimed at finding a diplomatic solution to the decades-long nuclear dispute have been cancelled.

Tehran has also requested that US allies in the region “prevent Washington from attacking”.
