Former President Trump has stated the United States should have a role in choosing Iran’s next leader, a demand he made during a telephone interview. This assertion comes as Iran is in the process of selecting a successor following the death of its previous leader.
Trump Calls for Role in Selecting Iran’s Next Leader
Trump insisted on the right to help choose Iran’s next leader, who is meant to be a senior Shi’ite Muslim cleric selected by a panel of religious experts. He made his most explicit demand for control over a country of more than 90 million people, stating, “We’re going to have to choose that person along with Iran. We’re going to have to choose that person.”
The remarks could complicate efforts to end the conflict through a deal that would maintain Iran’s clerical rule. Israel has publicly expressed a desire to overthrow Iran’s ruling system. The U.S. government has stated its goal is to limit Iran’s ability to project force beyond its borders and has also encouraged Iranians to challenge their government.
There has been no immediate response from Iranian officials to Trump’s comments. Iran has characterized the conflict as an unprovoked attack and described the killing of its leader as an assassination.
According to Iranian officials, the panel responsible for selecting the new leader is currently undertaking its work. Initial reports suggested that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the previous leader and a hardliner, was a leading candidate for the position, potentially leading to a dynastic succession. However, plans for a swift transition appear to have stalled after a three-day mourning period was postponed indefinitely.
Some Iranians openly celebrated the death of the previous leader, following weeks of protests where security forces killed thousands of demonstrators. However, there has been limited public opposition during the recent airstrikes, with activists citing safety concerns.
