Tokyo, Feb. 17 (Jiji Press) — Japan will assist young people in Gaza in achieving economic independence as a means of preventing radicalization, according to Takeshi Okubo, the Japanese ambassador in charge of assisting the reconstruction of the Palestinian territory.
Japan to Support Gaza Youth Economic Independence
Okubo stated that providing “assistance that gives hope to young people, who account for over 60 percent of residents there,” is key to this effort.
During a visit to an industrial park in Gaza prior to the start of fighting between Israel and Hamas in October 2023, Okubo observed products being manufactured of “quite high quality.”
The Japanese envoy highlighted the “innovative talent” demonstrated by many young people in Gaza despite the challenging circumstances. He proposed holding online business contests, with winners receiving funding to study in Japan. He also suggested providing prosthetic legs, temporary housing, and simplified water purifiers.
Okubo emphasized Japan’s history of providing unique assistance to Palestine, including “technical assistance by experts living together with local residents” and an aid scheme utilizing assets of Asian countries.
