Megaquake Advisory Lifted, Caution Remains in Northern Japan

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the advisory for 182 municipalities in Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki and Chiba prefectures, following the December 8 quake.

The December 8 earthquake registered an intensity of upper 6 on the Japanese scale of zero to 7 in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture. Tsunami warnings and advisories were also issued for coastal areas in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region.

The agency had said there were heightened risks of mega quakes occurring along the Japan Trench and the Chishima Trench in the northern Pacific.

The advisory, which urged residents to prepare emergency evacuation bags, ended at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Despite the advisory’s conclusion, the agency emphasized that the risk of a massive earthquake has not disappeared and could strike suddenly.

Officials are continuing to urge people to review evacuation sites and routes, and to secure furniture to prevent it from toppling during an earthquake.
