Jared Palmer, who served as Vice President of Engineering at Xbox, has resigned from his position at Microsoft to join the AI company Cognition, where he will lead engineering. Palmer announced his departure via social media on July 21, 2026, marking the end of a brief tenure at the gaming division.

Palmer’s exit comes just months after he was appointed to the Xbox leadership team. He officially joined the division in May 2026 as part of a management restructuring initiated by new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who had assumed her role in February 2026. Palmer had previously worked at Microsoft’s CoreAI team, joining that division in October 2025 before transitioning to Xbox.
Role and Responsibilities at Xbox
As a key member of Sharma’s leadership team, Palmer was tasked with advising the CEO on the platform’s infrastructure and developer tools. Sharma had defined his role as working directly with her on the organization’s most complex product and engineering problems,
with a specific focus on developer tooling, infrastructure, and “taste.”
At the time of his appointment in May, Sharma praised Palmer’s professional background, noting that he had spent his career building developer tools designed to remove friction and increase productivity for creators. She stated that his mindset was exactly the mindset we want, using technology to support creators.
Context of the Departure
Palmer’s departure coincides with a period of significant transition for Xbox. Under CEO Asha Sharma, the division is currently undergoing what has been described as the most significant restructure in Xbox history.
This “Xbox reset” includes a total of 3,200 planned job cuts, with 1,600 employees laid off on July 6, 2026, and a further 1,600 reductions scheduled over the following 12 months. Additionally, Microsoft is in the process of divesting from several gaming studios.
While the reasons for Palmer’s sudden resignation remain officially undisclosed, industry observers have pointed to the competitive nature of the AI sector. According to purexbox.com, reporting by Windows Central’s Jez Corden suggests the move may have been driven by a significant financial offer from Cognition. GamesBeat editor Dean Takahashi noted that the gaming industry may face similar talent departures as professionals are drawn to the high valuations and investment currently surrounding AI companies.
Cognition, which is led by CEO and co-founder Scott Wu, is an applied AI lab valued at over $4 billion. The startup gained attention for developing “Devin,” an AI coding tool described as the first autonomous software engineer.
Future of the Engineering Leadership
It is currently unclear how Xbox intends to fill the vacancy left by Palmer. Sharma’s leadership team also includes other recent appointees such as David Schloss, who serves as the head of Xbox subscription and cloud work.
For now, the company has not provided a formal response regarding a replacement for the VP of Engineering role.
