Petrified wood discovered in the Kyffhäuser Mountains of central Germany acts as a natural geological archive, preserving up to 300 million years of Earth’s history. A research team led by geologist Dr. Steffen Trümper at the University of Münster analyzed the fossils and published their findings in Phys.org.

While people have known about these fossils since at least the 18th century—when they were viewed merely as handsome curiosities—scientists have now demonstrated for the first time that the material records how a region was buried, heated, and later uplifted over hundreds of millions of years.

Ancient Forests of Pangaea and Preservation in River Sediments

The fossilized remains originate from trees that grew roughly 300 million years ago during the Carboniferous Period, when the region sat near the equator in tropical dry forests on the ancient supercontinent Pangaea. These trees were early relatives of today’s conifers, though this specific group has long since vanished.

Floods buried the trees in riverbeds and fluvial redbeds—reddish deposits colored by embedded iron oxides resulting from a warm, seasonally dry climate. Some of the recovered fossilized trunks run up to 20 meters (66 feet) long. Once buried, silicic acids entered the wood, producing opal formations and quartz that preserved the internal structure of the cell walls.

Five Generations of Silica Record Deep Earth Transformations

By examining different layers of quartz inside the fossils using advanced imaging and dating techniques, the research team identified five distinct stages of mineral formation. These stages span 200 million years from the late Carboniferous into the Early Cretaceous, extending to approximately 300 million years when accounting for subsequent tectonic uplift.

According to the researchers, this represents the longest documented sequence of successive wood mineralization stages ever found. Tiny pockets of fluid trapped inside the quartz crystals proved particularly revealing. The tiny fluid inclusions in the quartz were particularly revealing, as they preserve information about the exact conditions during crystal growth, Dr. Steffen Trümper said in a statement.

The analysis revealed that parts of the fossilized wood were buried between 3 and 5.5 kilometers (1.9 to 3.4 miles) underground, where surrounding rock temperatures reached 160 to 240 degrees Celsius (320 to 464 degrees Fahrenheit).

A New Geological Tool for Tracing Continental Evolution

The quartz layers record a slow rhythm of sinking and rising in the Saale Basin, a sedimentary basin that formed around 300 million years ago. Today, the fossilized wood lies at the surface directly in front of the Kyffhäuser Monument, indicating an immense regional uplift in the more recent past.

The researchers noted that the uranium-lead clock starting with the initial mineralization in the late Carboniferous was not completely reset during subsequent underground heating events. Because fossilized wood appears in numerous rock formations worldwide, scientists believe similar specimens could become valuable tools for reconstructing the long-term geological evolution of other continents and basins.
