Kaneland’s Kyra Lilly: From Soccer Field Endurance to Basketball Impact
Maple Park, IL – Kaneland High School senior Kyra Lilly is rapidly becoming a pivotal force for the Knights’ girls basketball team, leveraging a relentless work ethic honed on the soccer pitch. In a dominant 53-22 nonconference victory over Plano on Tuesday, Lilly showcased her growing offensive prowess, tying teammate Grace Brunscheen as the game’s leading scorer with 13 points.
The Two-Sport Athlete’s Advantage
Lilly, a Lake Forest College soccer recruit, doesn’t limit her athletic pursuits to one discipline. Her success on the basketball court, however, is directly linked to the stamina and unwavering effort she cultivates as a soccer player. The constant running and expansive coverage required in soccer translate seamlessly to basketball, allowing her to consistently contribute on both ends of the floor.
“If I’m just running, I figure I’m doing something if I’m going as hard as I can,” Lilly explained, encapsulating her approach to the game. This philosophy, according to Kaneland coach Brian Claesson, is precisely what makes her such a valuable asset.
“She literally does everything for us,” Claesson stated. “She does everything we ask of her. Defensively, she’s a coach on the floor. She’s been playing really great for us.”
A Third Scoring Option Emerges
While Grace Brunscheen and Amani Meeks have established themselves as Kaneland’s primary offensive threats, Lilly’s consistent improvement is providing a crucial third dimension to the Knights’ attack. Her 13 points against Plano, matching Brunscheen’s total, underscored her growing confidence and scoring ability.
“We’ve been looking for that third option for scoring after Amani and Grace,” Claesson noted. “And she’s been stepping up.”
The Knights’ second-quarter surge, a 26-0 run that effectively sealed the victory, was fueled by Lilly’s relentless energy and timely scoring, including three consecutive layups.

Plano Faces Challenges, Kaneland Finds Consistency
Plano coach Tristan Spivey acknowledged his team’s struggles with consistency, particularly after a competitive start. “We play like that sometimes,” Spivey said. “I told the girls after the first quarter not to let the game get away from us.” Plano also faced a setback with an injury to freshman point guard Le’Niya Viser, who Spivey described as a key ball-handler.
Despite being a relatively new team, Kaneland is demonstrating remarkable cohesion. Claesson expressed his surprise at how quickly the team is gelling. “A lot of different roles, I think it’s coming along faster than I thought,” he said. “Now, we’re just harping on being more consistent.”

Lilly embodies this commitment to consistency, consistently delivering high-energy play. “I never have to sub her out,” Claesson remarked. “She just plays so hard and never gets tired. It’s awesome to have that.”
