It was a clash of generations and momentum in Shanghai. Kyren Wilson, the 2024 world champion and current title holder, managed to stifle a late-game rally from Ronnie O’Sullivan to advance. While O’Sullivan showed flashes of the brilliance that defined his career, Wilson’s consistency under pressure proved decisive in the 6-4 victory.
Wilson’s Path to the Quarter-Finals
Wilson established early control of the match, utilizing breaks of 113 and 91 to jump to a 3-1 lead. O’Sullivan refused to fade quietly, responding with a blistering sequence of three consecutive centuries—breaks of 100, 111, and 131—which allowed him to claw back and briefly lead 4-3.
The momentum shifted back to the defending champion in the closing stages. In the ninth frame, O’Sullivan managed a 79-point series despite a difficult position to regain the lead. However, Wilson responded in the tenth frame with a 97-point series to clinch the match. Wilson closed the door on O’Sullivan’s comeback by winning three frames in a row, supported by runs of 89, 79, and 97. This clinical finish secured the 6-4 result and set up a quarter-final match against Mark Williams, who advanced after a 6-5 win over Chris Wakelin.
In the match between Williams and Wakelin, the Welshman started convincingly, gaining a two and three frame advantage. Wakelin lost control of the game and surrendered his lead, though he forced a deciding frame. Williams eventually secured his place in the next round with a 65-point series in the final frame, having produced the only century break of that match in the ninth frame.
Kyren Wilson, 2024 world champion, said it is always great playing in Shanghai and against someone of Ronnie O’Sullivan’s class, noting that the crowds turn out in large numbers for him, which inspires Wilson and makes him want to play snooker.
Off-Table Struggles and Personal Stakes
For Wilson, the victory in Shanghai carried weight beyond the scoreboard. The snooker star revealed that his house was burgled in June during a tournament in Leicester, an event that took a toll on his family.
Kyren Wilson, 2024 world champion, explained that things have been really tough off the table, not only for himself but for his entire family, but added that such is life and one must move on and deal with it.

He also traveled to the tournament with his children, stating that he had his kids with him and wanted to show them how amazing snooker is there, and he hoped they enjoyed the match.
