Lightning kills two, injures 150 in South Africa

A lightning strike at a festival north of Pretoria, South Africa, killed two people and injured approximately 150 others on Saturday night.

The incident occurred near the village of Mathibestad, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Pretoria, where an annual traditional celebration was underway.

According to the North West health department, 150 patients sought medical attention after being struck by lightning. Of those, two died and 13 were listed in critical condition and transferred to another health facility.

Storms are common in the region during the current summer season in the southern hemisphere.
