Louvre Heist: Four Charged as Investigation Intensifies Over Stolen Napoleonic Jewels

The 34-year-old, identified as an Algerian national, was apprehended at Charles de Gaulle Airport while attempting to board a flight to Algeria. Crucially, his DNA was found to match traces discovered on a scooter believed to have been used in the getaway, providing a key piece of evidence for investigators.

Three individuals previously detained in connection with the case have since been released, with their lawyers asserting their clients’ innocence. Sofia Bougrine and Noemie Gorin, representing one of the released individuals, commented, “In these serious crime cases, we find that waves of arrests look more like drift nets,” highlighting concerns about the breadth of the initial investigation.

Despite the progress in identifying suspects, the location of the stolen jewels remains unknown. The missing artifacts include emerald- and sapphire-encrusted diadems, necklaces, and brooches once worn by the wives of Napoleon Bonaparte and other 19th-century royals. The Empress’s crown, adorned with over 1,000 jewels, was briefly located outside the museum but has since disappeared again. The estimated value of the collection is approximately $100 million.
