Lovell Radio Telescope Faces Closure After UK Funding Cut By 2028

British scientists have reacted with alarm after the government funding body U.K. Research and Innovation announced that funding for the world-famous Lovell radio telescope at the Jodrell Bank Observatory in northwest England will end in March 2028, threatening the facility with closure unless alternative support is secured.

The decision to pull public funding from the iconic 250-foot-wide parabolic reflecting bowl at Jodrell Bank forms part of a broader four-year savings programme rolled out by the Science and Technology Facilities Council as it attempts to balance its budget by 2030. Throughout the year, the STFC stated it needed to make £162m in savings, driven by cost overruns from soaring electricity, staff costs, and high foreign exchange rates for international collaborations such as CERN.

However, figures obtained by Research Professional News suggest the underlying financial strain may be significantly worse, indicating a combined forecast cost overrun of £684m across the four years of the government’s latest spending review period. The agency defended the move as the result of a rigorous prioritization process to focus investment on the areas that will deliver the greatest long-term scientific capability, impact and value for the U.K.

The History and Strategic Importance of Jodrell Bank

Established in the Cheshire countryside in December 1945 by Bernard Lovell to study cosmic rays using army surplus radar, the observatory pioneered radio astronomy. Completed in 1957 just as Sputnik launched, the Lovell telescope was uniquely capable of tracking the Soviet satellite. During the Cold War, it served as an early-warning system to monitor Soviet missiles. Its decades of contributions earned the site UNESCO World Heritage status in 2019.

Today, the Lovell telescope acts as the anchor for e-MERLIN, a network of seven radio telescopes spanning the United Kingdom that forms a national radio astronomy capability. Unless alternative funding is secured from businesses, government sources, or charities, all scientific observations will stop on 31 March 2028. While the site’s public engagement center will remain open to schoolchildren and visitors, the telescope itself faces becoming an inactive instrument.

Widespread Cuts Across UK Astronomy and Physics

The threat to Jodrell Bank is accompanied by a wave of reductions across the wider scientific ecosystem. The Science and Technology Facilities Council faced fears of a 30 percent cut to particle physics, nuclear physics, and astronomy before securing a headline reduction of 2.7 percent following lobbying by the Royal Astronomical Society. Within that headline figure, however, professional instruments face targeted reductions of 10 percent.

Outrage From Scientists and Political Reaction

Prominent figures within the academic community have criticized the decisions sharply. University of Manchester particle physicist Brian Cox described the cuts as devastating and irreversible, while calling them hasty and ill-considered. Paul Howarth, president of the Institute of Physics, labeled the measures a terrible blow to the scientific community and urged leadership to reconsider.

In response to the mounting pressure, Secretary of State Jonathan Reynolds stated that the UK’s research sector remains essential for future growth. Reynolds emphasized an commitment to working with UKRI to maintain world-leading research capabilities and support the next generation of scientific infrastructure.
