Indonesian police have dismantled a massive vehicle smuggling network into Timor-Leste that allegedly shipped thousands of illegal motorcycles, cars, and trucks into the country since early 2025.

The investigation began on April 15 after authorities intercepted two containers carrying dozens of motorcycles and cars that lacked proper documentation. Commissioner Kombes Julianto, director of criminal investigation for the Central Java regional police, stated that the illegal practice had been ongoing since January 2025.
Seizures and Arrests in the Vehicle Smuggling Network into Timor-Leste
As part of the crackdown, officers raided a warehouse in the Klaten district of Central Java province. During the operation in Wonosari, police seized 46 motorcycles, four cars, and two trucks allegedly destined for Timor-Leste.
Authorities have detained two individuals in connection with the scheme. One suspect is believed to be the financier of the operation, while the second served as an intermediary with buyers located in Timor-Leste.
Police revealed that the group acquired vehicles through various means and produced false documents to facilitate the illegal shipments. The total value of the transactions is estimated at US$6.25 million.
