Pierre Sage endured a frustrating return to the Groupama Stadium on Thursday as his Crystal Palace side slipped to a 3-2 defeat against Lyon in the UEFA Europa League. Facing the Ligue 1 club that sacked him in January 2025, Sage watched his team struggle through a timid first half before mounting an unsuccessful comeback after the interval.
Lyon Takes Control Before the Break
The hosts seized the initiative early when Corentin Tolisso reacted fastest inside the penalty area to sweep home following lackluster defending during a routine corner, according to Sky Sports. That 8th-minute breakthrough set the tone for a one-sided opening period. Palace failed to register a single shot on target during the first 45 minutes.
Right before the halftime whistle, Ernest Nuamah doubled Lyon’s advantage by guiding his effort past the visitors’ defense to make it 2-0. Fans highlighted the recurring defensive frailties plaguing the London club, with one noting a lack of leadership at the back in the absence of Dean Henderson.
Palace Fights Back Too Late
Sage sparked an immediate response after the restart. In the 50th minute, Adam Wharton slipped a fine pass into the box, allowing Yéremy Pino to pull a goal back with a brilliant strike into the roof of the net near the post. The Premier League visitors looked completely transformed after the interval.
However, Lyon restored their two-goal cushion in the 76th minute. Keito Nakamura fired a shot toward goal that was cleverly flicked in by substitute Pavel Sulc. Palace continued to push forward, feeling aggrieved when Daichi Kamada was bundled over inside the area by Nuamah in the 68th minute. Play was waved on, and VAR cleared the incident, much to the frustration of the visitors.
Kamada did manage to halve the deficit with under ten minutes remaining, slamming home to make it 3-2. Yet the resurgence ultimately fell short. Crystal Palace’s defeat was a disappointing result, Sage told Sky Sports after the match. I can’t take satisfaction from coming back home or seeing familiar faces when the result isn’t there.

Palace Struggle with Set-Piece Goals Before Brighton Clash
The defeat compounds a troubling defensive record for the Eagles. Sky Sports noted that Palace have now shipped 35 set-piece goals in all competitions since the start of last season, a vulnerability surpassed by only Chelsea on 37 and Newcastle on 36.
The team faces a tricky domestic clash against rivals Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, October 18, ahead of a demanding European trip to Turkey to face Beşiktaş in their next continental outing.
