Police detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson said the female victim is “understandably extremely shaken.” She sustained moderate injuries in the attack, which was reported to police at approximately 10:30 p.m.
After responding to the scene on Ohiwa Harbour Road, police conducted inquiries in the area to locate the alleged offender. He was found on Phoenix Drive in Whakatāne shortly after 12:30 a.m. and taken into custody.
Wilson stated that police are providing the victim with all necessary support. A scene examination will take place on Ohiwa Harbour Road today as the investigation into the “heinous attack” continues.
“We understand the community will be shaken following this incident, and police will conduct reassurance patrols in the area,” Wilson said. Initial inquiries suggest this is an isolated incident, and there is not believed to be any further risk to the public.
The man is scheduled to appear in the Whakatāne District Court today.
