Manila Bulletin – Senators back calls to replace Chinese ambassador to improve China-Philippines relations

Philippine senators are calling for the replacement of the Chinese ambassador to Manila following recent critical statements made by a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy against members of the Senate, including Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.

Calls for Ambassador’s Replacement

Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito stated that Ambassador Jing Quan has been hostile during his two months in the Philippines, rather than fostering positive relations between the two countries. He believes this behavior is detrimental to the already strained relationship due to ongoing issues in the West Philippine Sea.

“Instead of dousing cold water to the fire, he’s adding fuel to the fire. So I think it would be better to replace him with someone more diplomatic in dealing with the host country,” Ejercito said.

Ejercito emphasized the Senate’s desire for a diplomatic resolution and rejected accusations of being pro-war. He defended Senate Resolution No. 256, which condemns the Chinese embassy’s criticism of Philippine officials defending the country’s sovereignty and maritime rights.

“The majority are in unison in standing up for what is right and fighting for what the UNCLOS ruling has given our country,” he said.

Support from Other Senators

Senator Raffy Tulfo echoed Ejercito’s call, describing the new ambassador as “very aggressive and very sensitive” compared to his predecessors. He believes a replacement would benefit the relationship between China and the Philippines.

“The new one is very sensitive and aggressive at the same time. Very onion-skinned and aggressive in their actions and reactions to the developments here,” Tulfo stated.

Senator Robinhood “Robin” Padilla, while not signing Resolution No. 256, also defended the Senate’s position. He also expressed support for President Marcos Jr.’s approach to the dispute with China.

Senate President’s Response

Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III downplayed the latest remarks made by Chinese embassy spokesperson Ji Lingpeng, stating, “When someone triggers you to react and you do not, it’s annoying! I prefer to be annoying!”
