With the best record in franchise history to this point in a season and a division lead that stood at 6 1/2 games over the Cubs with 60 regular-season games to go after Wednesday’s 4-3 win over the Mets at American Family Field, the Milwaukee Brewers are preparing for an aggressive push at the August 3 trade deadline. President of baseball operations Matt Arnold has confirmed the club is definitely active
as they look to bolster their roster.
Targeting Elite Arms: The Skubal and Miller Rumors
Milwaukee’s front office has engaged in discussions with other clubs regarding high-impact talent. Brewers officials have touched base with the Detroit Tigers about starter Tarik Skubal, a back-to-back American League Cy Young Award winner, and with the San Diego Padres about closer Mason Miller. However, Arnold noted that the team must wait for those clubs to decide to trade those specific players, while simultaneously evaluating how much to deal from their young crop of Major League starters or from MLB Pipeline’s top-ranked Minor League system.
The price for a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber is significant. According to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, any framework for a deal involving Skubal would likely require the inclusion of right-hander Logan Henderson. Henderson, 24, is currently on a one-year, $780,000 deal and will be in the pre-arbitration stage next season. While Henderson recently returned from a stint on the injured list due to a low back strain and holds a 3-1 record with a 2.97 ERA through seven starts, he would likely be the fourth option in the rotation if the staff were fully healthy. If the Tigers were to get bold, they could ask for prospects like Jacob Misiorowski or Kyle Harrison to match the value of Skubal.
Managing the Farm System and Trade Capital
Despite their aggressive stance, the Brewers face a delicate balancing act. Milwaukee officials have been informing other teams that they will not decimate the farm system to satisfy a trade. Because the Brewers do not rely on free agency to populate their roster, they must prioritize stockpiling prospects, particularly position-player prospects. The front office prides itself on finding value and remains careful not to overpay for acquisitions, having previously finished second-best in the pursuits of Jack Flaherty in 2024 and Eugenio Suárez in 2025.
40-Man Roster Constraints and Potential Departures
The deadline maneuvering is further complicated by a crowded 40-man roster, which is currently at max capacity following the additions of Lance McCullers Jr. and Colton Gordon. To make room for those newcomers, the team transferred Rob Zastryzny to the 60-day injured list and designated Greg Jones for assignment.
The club must now clear additional space for future returns. Brandon Lockridge is expected to return to the roster around the trade deadline, and Rob Zastryzny is expected back at some point in August. The presumed departure of Braden Shewmake to add David Hamilton back to the active roster will open one spot, but the team may need to trade one or two members of the current 40-man roster to facilitate further external additions before the August 3 deadline at 6 p.m. ET.
