Search for Missing Businessman

Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo stated that a joint team had been searching for the man for about a week. The team included the SA Police Service Search and Rescue Unit, NatJoints, SANParks, Emergency Medical Services, Securecon, and the local port management committee.

The investigation began after the 59-year-old businessman was reported missing. His Ford Ranger had been found trapped at a low-lying bridge in the river.

During the search, authorities identified a crocodile in the river that was suspected of being involved in the incident. After obtaining the necessary permissions, the animal was euthanized, leading to the retrieval of the remains.

Colonel Masondo confirmed that DNA tests will be conducted to determine if the remains are those of the missing businessman.

Video footage showing the crocodile being hoisted out of the water by a helicopter has since circulated on social media.

Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the search team for their dedication. Mkhwanazi noted that the team put their lives in danger and persisted despite facing dangerous situations.
