Conservative shadow foreign secretary Dame Priti Patel has urged the British government to take stronger action against Russia, asserting that current sanctions are being circumvented. Patel’s call came during a conference in Munich, following the death of Alexei Navalny.

Priti Patel Calls for Increased Sanctions Against Russia

Speaking at the Munich conference, Patel stated that action needs to be taken against Russia, recalling her government’s leading role in imposing sanctions and calling for a transparent investigation into Navalny’s murder in 2024.

She argued for “cutting off all the financial flows” supporting the Russian economy, specifically suggesting targeting Russian oil refineries and businesses.

“We’ve really got to start taking direct action against these financial lifelines that basically are propping up Russia, the Russian state, and this awful permissive Russian activity that we’re seeing, including the state sponsored murders and assassinations that the Russian state is so heavily involved in,” Patel said.

Patel also called for direct action against individuals in the UK, and for the British ambassador to be called in to address the situation.

The Russian embassy in London responded with a statement denying any involvement in Navalny’s death, dismissing Western findings as lacking evidence and fueled by “media hysteria.”

The embassy statement criticized what it called “necro-propaganda,” accusing Western politicians of mocking the dead and obstructing a peaceful rest for Navalny.

The statement further questioned the claims surrounding Navalny’s death, referencing previous accusations and questioning the credibility of Western “experts.”
