Up to eight members of the Kinahan cartel could face charges in connection with the 2016 murder of Eddie Hutch, according to a former top police official. Former Superintendent Martin Mooney stated that Daniel Kinahan, the alleged head of the cartel, is among the “persons of interest” named in a substantial investigation file as authorities close in on the group.
Investigation File Under Review
The extensive file is currently being examined by the Director of Public Prosecutions. Investigators from the Gardaí’s North Central Division have recommended charges including murder, participation in an organized crime gang, directing the activities of such a gang, and facilitating criminal activity.
Kinahan’s Alleged Role
While investigators do not believe Daniel Kinahan was directly involved in the shooting, they allege he ordered the hit after recruiting a team of assassins. The suspected shooter is currently incarcerated, and other alleged members of the hit squad have a history of organized crime involvement.
Eddie Hutch, the brother of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch, was shot dead at his home on Poplar Row on February 6, 2016, just days after a Hutch hit squad attacked the Regency Hotel and murdered David Byrne.
Ten Years Since the Murder
Speaking on the tenth anniversary of Eddie Hutch’s murder, Martin Mooney expressed hope that decisions regarding charges would be made in the coming months. He described the investigation file as one of the largest he has encountered in his 40-year career, emphasizing the thoroughness of the investigation.
“No stone has been left unturned in this investigation and there are a number of people who have been recommended to face some very serious charges,” Mooney said. “My hope is we’ll get to hear of possible charges being brought against Daniel Kinahan and other senior figures within organised crime over the coming months.”
Mooney added that the investigation spanned multiple countries and involved a large volume of evidence. He believes the DPP will be satisfied with the level of investigation conducted.
Kinahan Cartel’s Intent
According to Mooney, the Kinahan organization targeted Eddie Hutch with the intention of inflicting maximum damage on Gerry Hutch. He noted the terror they brought to the streets of the north inner city during the early stages of the feud and expressed satisfaction with the efforts to bring them to justice.
Former Assistant Commissioner Pat Leahy also voiced hope for charges to be brought against the Kinahan hit team, acknowledging the extensive work done on the case.
Former Lord Mayor Nial Ring described the anger surrounding Hutch’s murder, stating he was a popular figure and not involved in criminal activity. He expressed hope for a positive decision from the DPP and justice for Hutch.
- Following the Regency Hotel attack and subsequent events, Gardaí have conducted 51 interventions in threat-to-life incidents.
- 70 firearms and 4,376 rounds of ammunition have been seized.
- €31.8 million worth of controlled drugs and €11.1 million in cash have been seized.
Leahy stated that a lot of senior figures connected to the Kinahan organization are already in prison and he would welcome news of charges being filed in this investigation.
Investigators believe Daniel Kinahan contacted Eddie Hutch in the weeks before his murder, potentially to arrange a meeting, after cartel members unsuccessfully attempted to kill Gerry Hutch in Lanzarote.
