Arsenal’s opening transfer bid for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães has been rejected as direct club talks begin. Guimarães, who joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022, has told the club he wants to move to north London, though the Magpies are holding out for a valuation of around £80m.

Direct lines of communication have finally opened between Arsenal and managerless Newcastle United after weeks of speculation surrounding Bruno Guimarães. The Premier League champions submitted their first formal offer for the Brazil midfielder, but Newcastle rejected the opening bid.
Football expert Julian Laurens, speaking on Sky Sports News, described the unfolding situation as an interesting chess game
between the two clubs. While personal terms between the player and Arsenal present no hurdle, establishing a mutually acceptable transfer fee remains the core obstacle.
“That first bid was always going to happen about now, it was always going to be rejected. Now, the two clubs can discuss it a bit more.”

Valuation Gap and Summer Upheaval at St James’ Park
The two clubs remain some distance apart on valuation. Newcastle value their captain at around £80m, retaining a strong negotiating position because Guimarães has two years remaining on his contract alongside a club-held option for a third season.
The Magpies face pressure following a turbulent summer. Newcastle have already lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham in a £100m club-record deal, while continuing to count the cost of Alexander Isak’s protracted move to Liverpool last summer.
Despite the departures, the club’s leadership is reluctant to see another vital player exit. Guimarães has made 195 appearances and scored 31 goals for Newcastle since arriving from Lyon in January 2022 for £40million. He also captained the side to League Cup glory in 2025, ending a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.
Player Return to Pre-Season Training in Spain
Guimarães left Brazil on Sunday following an extended break after representing his national team at the World Cup. He arrived in Spain in agreement with Newcastle to join the squad at their pre-season training camp in La Manga.
Prior to his return, Guimarães posted a tribute to the departing Howe on Instagram, calling him the king of this club
and thanking him for helping develop him as both a player and a person. Unlike last summer’s saga with Isak—who went on strike to force a move—Guimarães has maintained communication with management, returning to camp while Arsenal work on finalizing an agreement.
“I expect to see this go through in the next couple of weeks, and from an Arsenal point of view they get not only one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, but someone who can play as a No 6, a No 8 and a No 10.”
