NordicTrack Launches the Ultra 1 Reformer in Australia

Australians have an undeniable obsession with Pilates, ranking in the top five countries globally for interest in the discipline. While millions hit mats and carriages to build core strength and fix posture, the traditional Pilates reformer has remained a highly mechanical and clunky piece of studio equipment. Global fitness technology companies iFIT and NordicTrack are now rewriting that hardware script with the launch of the Ultra 1 Reformer, which arrived on the Australian market this week. This machine is the first genuinely connected Pilates line in the world, bringing smart technology into the living room.

NordicTrack Launches the Ultra 1 Reformer in Australia

NordicTrack has unveiled what it is calling its most ambitious Pilates machine yet. The launch marks a notable moment for the company, as entirely new product categories do not come around very often for the brand, which is most famous for its high-end treadmills and rowing machines. The Ultra 1 Reformer is designed to bring a studio-style reformer experience into the home, complete with a large HD touchscreen, smart resistance controls, and integrated iFIT workouts.

The Smart Spine System Replaces Manual Springs

The design of the Ultra 1 Reformer follows the language introduced by the brand’s Ultra 1 treadmill, including a furniture-style maple finish intended to blend into modern homes rather than look like traditional gym equipment. NordicTrack says the machine was built to remove some of the complexity and intimidation often associated with reformer Pilates. Features include push-button resistance controls that allow users to adjust tension digitally rather than manually swapping springs, and a “Smart Spine” enclosed resistance system. This system is designed to create smoother, quieter movement while keeping the mechanics hidden inside.

According to those who have tested the machine, it feels less like a single piece of kit and more like a fully immersive training platform, effectively functioning as the “Peloton of the Pilates world.” Performance is described as exceptional; the carriage glide is smooth and almost silent, with none of the clunky return sometimes found on at-home models. It does not clang thanks to a stopper, and it feels controlled, fluid, and top-tier studio-grade. The enclosed Smart Spine system houses two heavy and two light springs, providing up to 65kg of resistance. This design not only looks sleeker and feels safer—preventing hair or clothing from getting caught mid-session—but also utilizes push buttons to engage or release tension. The screen displays exactly what resistance is engaged, allowing users to easily switch if they have made a mistake.

The large HD touchscreen is powered by iFIT and is loaded with reformer and mat classes at every level, including for beginners. Users can filter sessions by instructor, duration, difficulty, body focus, equipment, and music genre. On-screen, users can see what is coming up next, including a countdown timer.

As the Good Housekeeping Nutrition & Fitness Lab director, one tester noted that while they were a fan of NordicTrack’s cardio equipment, they were initially skeptical, worrying the machine would prioritize flashy tech over performance. However, after taking a class on the reformer to get a firsthand look at the smart features, design, and overall experience, they were able to evaluate the machine’s utility.

Activation of the equipment requires a free account and agreement to terms. The iFIT experience requires internet and Wi-Fi access. The membership auto-renews for $39 per month plus tax unless canceled in advance. For residents in Canada and the United States who are at least the age of majority, a 30-day home trial promotion is available. To initiate a return, customers must contact Customer Service within 30 days of delivery to schedule a pickup. Eligible returns are refunded at the purchase price less a $249.99 return shipping charge, and delivery and assembly costs are non-refundable.
