NPA Landmine Blast Kills Two Soldiers

The explosion occurred in the Balatan area of Camarines Sur province during an anti-rebel operation, according to the 9th Infantry Division. The soldiers were conducting operations against the NPA when they detonated a landmine.

Army Chief Lt. Gen. Roy Galido expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. He condemned the NPA’s use of landmines, calling it a violation of international humanitarian law and a threat to civilians.

The NPA has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The military continues to pursue the NPA rebels in the area.

The incident occurred ahead of a planned unilateral ceasefire by the government, intended to facilitate peace negotiations with communist groups. The ceasefire is scheduled to take effect on March 23.
