While no human cases have been confirmed in the city, positive mosquito pools have nearly doubled compared to last year, prompting intensified trapping and larvicide operations.
New York City health officials are ramping up mosquito surveillance and control measures as the city contends with a sharp increase in West Nile virus detections across the five boroughs. According to the New York City Health Department, the virus was identified in 612 mosquito pools as of July 25, compared to 326 positive pools at the exact same point last year.
The first positive mosquito pool of the season was detected on June 16, notably earlier than the previous year when the initial positive pool appeared on July 1. Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin said the early detections show the city’s monitoring apparatus is functioning properly.
How New York City Monitors and Treats Mosquito Populations
The city’s surveillance network relies on consistent field collection. Each week, trained staff collect mosquitoes from hundreds of locations across the city. The agency groups these insects into samples, or pools, containing up to 50 mosquitoes each, which are then tested together for the presence of the virus. Out of more than 2,000 pools tested so far, 612 have returned positive results.
To combat the surge, the health department is intensifying surveillance in affected areas by deploying additional traps. City crews are also treating mosquito larvae before they can mature and transmit the virus. Officials have conducted four targeted mosquito control operations since July in neighborhoods where 315 positive pools were identified, with more operations scheduled in the coming weeks. Additional methods include dropping larvicide via helicopter over nonresidential spots like marshes and wetlands, alongside truck-mounted spraying for adult mosquitoes in select neighborhoods where residents receive at least one day of advance notice.
West Nile Virus Detections Reach Westchester County
The virus’s reach extends beyond city limits. The Westchester County Health Department announced that the New York State Department of Health discovered a batch of mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus in Rye. These mark the first positive test results countywide for the season, identified out of 61 batches collected by the county health department from 30 traps and tested by the state.

Symptoms and Personal Protection Measures
While most people infected with West Nile virus experience mild symptoms, the disease can cause severe neurologic illness in rare cases. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, and joint pain. Health officials emphasize that older adults and people with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions face the highest risk of severe complications, particularly individuals aged 60 and older.
- Limit outdoor activities during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active and feeding.
- Use EPA-registered insect repellents containing up to 30 percent DEET, following label instructions carefully. Adults can apply repellent to their own hands before rubbing it onto infants over two months old, avoiding the child’s hands, eyes, and mouth.
- Wear protective clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks when outdoors.
- Eliminate standing water around properties by checking toys, playhouses, discarded tires, recycling containers, buckets, and wheelbarrows.
- Drill drainage holes in outdoor recycling bins, change birdbath water at least twice weekly, and keep gutters and storm drains clear of leaves.
- Maintain proper chlorination in swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs, or drain any water collecting on their covers.
Although no human cases have been reported in New York City as of early August, local cases historically emerge between mid-July and early fall, aligning with the late-August peak noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
