Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela, known for his vocal criticism of China’s actions in the West Philippine Sea, has been promoted to rear admiral. The promotion was lauded by lawmakers and local government units for his staunch defense of Philippine sovereignty.

Tarriela’s Promotion Commended

Members of the House of Representatives’ Young Guns group commended Tarriela’s “fearless advocacy” and “tireless service” in defending the West Philippine Sea (WPS), according to a statement released by politiko.com.ph. Lawmakers also lauded his promotion to rear admiral.

The Puerto Princesa City Council also recognized both the PCG and Tarriela for their efforts in defending Philippine rights in the WPS, as reported by the Philippine Information Agency.

PCG Promotions

Tarriela was among three PCG officers elevated to the rank of rear admiral, according to The Global Filipino Magazine. The promotion recognizes his contributions to the PCG and his role as a spokesperson for Philippine interests in the WPS.

Tarriela has been a consistent and outspoken critic of China’s increasing assertiveness in the WPS, regularly addressing concerns over the presence of Chinese vessels and activities within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
