Pope Leo XIV issued a message of peace and healing on Wednesday following a series of insults from the Trump administration regarding the ongoing war in Iran.
- Vice President JD Vance questioned the Pope’s theology regarding war and divine intervention.
- Pope Leo XIV advocated for dialogue and unity during a visit to Africa.
- Donald Trump faced backlash over AI-generated religious imagery while labeling the pontiff “weak.”
Theological Dispute Over War in Iran
The friction intensified Tuesday when Vice President JD Vance insinuated that the pontiff was not being truthful in matters of theology and lacked an understanding of the concept of war.
Speaking at a Turning Point USA event at the University of Georgia, Vance questioned the Pope’s assertion that God is never on the side of those who wield the sword, specifically citing the American liberation of Holocaust camps.
Vance, a Catholic convert, had previously advised the US-born Pope Leo XIV to “stick to matters of morality.” This followed a post by the Pope on X denouncing the US-Israel war in Iran, stating that disciples of Christ are never on the side of those who “drop bombs.”
Pope Leo XIV’s Call for Unity
While traveling to Cameroon as part of an 11-day visit to Africa, Pope Leo spoke with reporters onboard the papal plane. He did not directly address the comments from Vance or Donald Trump, who has described him as “weak” and “terrible.”
The Pope referenced his visit to Annaba, the ancient city of Hippo, where St. Augustine once served as bishop. He emphasized that Augustine’s invitation to search for truth and God is essential for all people today.
Leo stated that his visit was intended to offer a vision of seeking unity and respect among all people despite their differences. He highlighted the relationship between Christians and Muslims in Algeria as a model for building bridges through dialogue.
Trump’s Social Media Conflict with the Vatican
The current dispute reflects a broader pattern of tension between Donald Trump and the Catholic church. Trump has frequently used his Truth Social platform to mock the head of the church.
On Monday, the president was forced to remove an AI-generated image of himself as a Jesus Christ-like healer following backlash from religious right supporters. On Wednesday, he shared another AI image depicting himself being held by Jesus Christ, captioned with a reference to “satanic, demonic, child sacrificing monsters.”
This is not the first instance of such behavior. In May of last year, during the mourning period for Pope Francis, Trump announced he “would like to be pope” and posted an image of himself wearing a white cassock and miter.
