President Prabowo Subianto has sought support from Russian President Vladimir Putin to shield Indonesia energy security from global supply disruptions and increasing geopolitical uncertainty.
- President Prabowo and President Putin committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
- Russia has expressed readiness to supply crude oil, gas, and electricity to Indonesia.
- The Indonesian government will maintain current prices for subsidized fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Strengthening Indonesia Energy Security
Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy Soeparno stated that President Prabowo has opened new avenues to secure crude oil and gas for domestic needs. Soeparno believes these guarantees move the country into a “safe zone” regarding its energy supplies.
The diplomatic strategy aims to mitigate risks in a global energy network increasingly defined by a seller’s market. In this environment, oil-producing nations hold significant leverage over pricing, volumes, and consumer targeting.
To protect public purchasing power, the government has decided against increasing the prices of subsidized fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Soeparno described this as a vital policy to sustain the economy for the general public.
Diplomatic Engagement in Moscow
President Prabowo and President Putin met at the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow on Monday, April 13. During the meeting, the Indonesian leader emphasized that communication with Russia is crucial for addressing economic and energy stability amid current global tensions.
Following the presidential summit, Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia met with Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev. The discussions focused on the direct purchase of crude oil and LPG.
Minister Lahadalia reported that the meeting was productive, noting that Russia is prepared to provide oil, gas, and electricity to help Indonesia maintain its energy security.
