President Donald Trump attends the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner Friday night at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C. The event, often referred to in Washington circles as “nerd prom,” returns nearly three months after the original gala was cut short by an attempted assassination of the president.
The annual black-tie dinner, which celebrates press freedom and raises money for journalism scholarships, was originally scheduled for April at the Washington Hilton. That event was postponed after a gunman attempted to breach a security checkpoint and opened fire outside the venue room where President Trump and members of his Cabinet were present.
Heightened Security and Unprecedented Threats
Friday’s event is being held under heightened security. Weijia Jiang, president of the WHCA and senior White House correspondent for CBS, previously announced that the rescheduled dinner would feature significantly enhanced safety measures and new access procedures.

The move to the Waldorf Astoria comes amid what Secret Service officials describe as an unprecedented level of nationwide threats. U.S. Secret Service Director Sean Curran stated on Wednesday that the agency has opened roughly 10,000 protective intelligence cases since January, a nearly 40% increase from the same period last year. The numbers are numbers that this agency and certainly I have never seen in my 24-year career,
Curran said.
Agency officials also reported that they have carried out nearly 10 times as many mental health-related interventions involving those making threats to protected individuals or venues compared to last year. These interventions include voluntary and involuntary commitments and efforts to work with relatives and mental-health providers to stabilize individuals. Officials attributed the surge in threats to a combination of online activity, lone actors, ideological grievances, foreign threats, and mental-health concerns, noting that most threats now originate online rather than through traditional methods like handwritten letters.
The April Incident
The shooting on the night of the original dinner caused chaos as guests dived under tables at the sound of gunfire. President Trump was uninjured and was rushed off the stage during the encounter. A Secret Service officer was shot once during the incident.
The suspect, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, was apprehended after charging at a security checkpoint while armed with multiple weapons. Associated Press reports suggest Allen is a highly educated tutor and amateur video game developer who earned a master’s degree in computer science from California State University-Dominguez Hills. Police believe the suspect acted alone, though officials did not initially describe a motive or confirm an intended target. Allen has since pleaded not guilty to charges including attempting to assassinate the president.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the White House condemned political violence,
and President Trump addressed the incident at the White House two hours later, stating, When you’re impactful, they go after you. When you’re not impactful, they leave you alone.
Presidential Address and Stakeholder Reaction
President Trump confirmed his attendance via a post on Truth Social, where he accepted an invitation from Jiang to speak. I don’t know whether or not I will give the same rather nasty statements, at least as it concerns certain people, but we will soon find out. In any event, it will be a 'HOT' ticket!
Trump wrote.
Regarding the tone of the president’s remarks, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said they would be a combination of unifying yet vicious, and serious yet hilarious, all at the same time.
The association maintains that the rescheduling was necessary to protect the legacy of the event. We will not allow an act of violence to have the last word, especially during a year when we are reflecting on the 250th anniversary of America and everything we stand for,
Jiang said in a letter to the press.
