Pride Flag Returns to Stonewall
New York City officials reinstated the Pride flag at the Stonewall Inn, the site of the 1969 uprising that launched the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The flag had been repeatedly removed during the Trump administration, most recently in June 2023, and replaced with an American flag.
The decision to fly the Pride flag at Stonewall is managed by the National Park Service, which operates the monument. The Trump administration had directed that only the American flag be flown at federal buildings, leading to the removal of the Pride flag.
“Today, we are sending a clear message that New York City stands with the LGBTQ+ community,” said a city official during the re-raising ceremony. Advocates emphasized the importance of the flag as a symbol of inclusivity and acceptance.
The Stonewall Inn remains a significant landmark and a place of pilgrimage for the LGBTQ+ community. The re-raising of the Pride flag signifies a return to recognizing and celebrating the contributions and struggles of LGBTQ+ individuals.
