Indonesian Muslim scholar Quraish Shihab offered a prayer for President Prabowo Subianto during a lecture at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday night, March 10, 2026, commemorating the Nuzulul Quran night.
Quraish Shihab’s Prayer for President Prabowo
Quraish’s lecture and prayer centered on the concept of power, drawing inspiration from his former teacher in Egypt, Sheikh Mutawalli Sha’rawi, who similarly prayed for the Egyptian president.
“He once prayed for the President of Egypt. The prayer began with the words: ‘Power comes from God,'” Quraish recounted at the end of his lecture.
Quraish explained that Sheikh Mutawalli believed that all power originates from God, regardless of whether a ruler is righteous or disobedient.
Following this principle, Quraish then directed his prayer toward President Prabowo, expressing hope that if it is God’s will for Prabowo to lead, the people would be able to assist him in benefiting the nation.
“He said, and this is what I want to pray for Mr. Prabowo: ‘I do not know, perhaps we will not meet again. I can only pray that if His Excellency is our destiny, the people-meaning God destines His Excellency to carry out activities that benefit the people-then we pray that we can help you, Sir,” he said.
Quraish continued, “But, if Sir, if His Excellency said, holds this position because it is the destiny of His Excellency to help uphold justice and peace, then we will pray that His Excellency is assisted by God and we will help as well. That is our prayer for Sir.”
He concluded his prayer with a supplication taught by Prophet Muhammad, seeking peace and paradise.
Prabowo’s Response
President Prabowo praised Quraish Shihab’s message following the lecture. “I am grateful, I thank you for this good night, I continue to be given lessons, warnings, and added spirit,” Prabowo stated.
Prabowo also thanked Quraish for delivering a lecture that highlighted the importance of peace, tranquility, and understanding differences. He noted the lecture served as a reminder of the meaning of justice and the responsibilities of leadership.
“The very big meaning for me is the enlightenment of understanding he conveyed about justice. And also about the fate of a leader trusted by the nation and the people,” said Prabowo, Chairman of the Gerindra Party.
Prabowo affirmed his belief that leadership is a divine destiny and that power is a trust to defend truth, justice, and honesty, ultimately serving to protect and improve the lives of the people.
