Residents of the luxury West Tower skyscraper on Deansgate are evacuating their homes after a major West Tower power cut has left the building without electricity and hot water until at least Monday.
- Estimated Restoration: Temporary generator power is expected Monday, April 13, 2026.
- Cause: A fault with a bespoke busbar component within the Deansgate Square site.
- Resident Support: Reimbursement for hotel and meal costs up to £120 per night for singles and couples.
The outage began Wednesday night around 9 p.m. While management initially suggested the problem would be rectified quickly, residents were notified Thursday evening that power will not be restored for several more days.
The 44-storey building, home to “The Residences,” is known for its luxury apartments and penthouses. Residents have reported a total lack of power and hot water, with some forced to use gym showers, though only two of four women’s showers were reportedly operational.
Infrastructure Failure and Restoration
Management confirmed the cause of the outage is a fault with the busbar within the Deansgate Square site. Because the required replacement component is bespoke, it is currently being manufactured and is expected to arrive on-site next week.
An emergency supply remains active for all lifts and life safety systems, including fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and automatic opening smoke vents.
Residents are being offered the choice to remain in their homes without power or seek alternative accommodation. Management has stated they will reimburse costs for hotels and meals up to £120 per night for singles and couples, while families are advised to seek further guidance from staff.
Resident Frustration and Financial Impact
Residents have expressed anger over the uncertainty of the situation and the lack of communication. Some have reported taking unpaid leave from work due to the lack of electricity and Wi-Fi.
Tensions have also risen over food losses, with residents claiming management is refusing to compensate for spoiled food from fridges and freezers.
The West Tower is among Manchester’s tallest buildings, with monthly rents ranging from £1,400 for one-bedroom units to an estimated £20,000 for luxury duplex penthouses.
Local Government Response
Local officials are now demanding urgent answers from the building’s management company. Deansgate Councillor Joan Davies stated that Electricity North West has confirmed the problem is an internal building issue rather than a wider grid failure.
City centre spokesperson Coun Pat Karney described the situation as an “unbelievable development” and is seeking an urgent meeting with the management company to assess how to assist the displaced residents.
