Salzburg and Tirol Hit by Severe Thunderstorms and Mudslides

A powerful cold front pushing in from the northwest brought severe weather across western Austria, hitting the federal state of Salzburg and neighboring Tirol with torrential rain and high winds.

Salzburg Emergency Crews Respond to 79 Operations After Flash Floods and Mudslides

In Salzburg, the provincial fire command logged 79 distinct operations involving 32 separate fire brigades as storms struck the Pinzgau and Pongau regions during Thursday afternoon. The worst-affected communities included Stuhlfelden, Uttendorf, Hollersbach, and Saalfelden, where swollen creeks breached their banks.

In Uttendorf, the Tobersbach overflowed, sending rushing water directly through parts of the village and depositing debris across local roads. Emergency units faced widespread challenges from overflowing brooks and water basins. Meanwhile, the Gasteinertal area saw two separate mudslides strike Dorfgastein and Bad Gastein, while Goldegg contended with severe water accumulation. In the Lungau district, firefighters were dispatched to Göriach to battle a forest fire that was likely triggered by a lightning strike. By evening, the storm front moved over the city of Salzburg and the northern Flachgau district, prompting 13 operations in the city and 14 in Flachgau.

Tyrolean Zillertal Roadways Blocked by Major Debris Flows

Across Tirol, heavy downpours sparked localized flooding and mudslides by Thursday evening, concentrating heavily in the Zillertal.

Mountain infrastructure took a direct hit. In Finkenberg, a mudslide in the Marchklamm blocked a hiking trail leading to a mountain hut, while additional debris flows disrupted routes toward the Stillupspeicher reservoir, Tux, and Ginzling. In Brandberg, the road into the Zillergrund was buried under mud and rock across multiple locations.

A minor debris flow first occurred in Tux near the Waldhütte on a municipal road, which was cleaned quickly without requiring a road closure or causing damage. However, a significantly larger slide struck the Schlegeisstraße in the Marchklamm area.

According to kurier.at, the debris material completely blocked the roadway across a width of about 20 meters and a height of approximately 5 meters.

The Ginzling volunteer fire department indicated that clearing the Schlegeisstraße would take until at least August 7, 2026. A third mudslide hit Brandberg around 6:45 p.m. near Zillergrund 60, extending toward Häusling. A trapped individual was rescued safely, and local firefighters spent the night handling cleanup operations, though heavy rain forced a police helicopter to abort its initial aerial survey flight.
