/ On Thursday, Israel summoned the Spanish ambassador to reprimand him after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez doubted that Israel respects international humanitarian law in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he had instructed the Foreign Minister to summon the Spanish ambassador to rebuke him “after the shameful statements made by the Spanish Prime Minister on the same day that Hamas terrorists killed Israelis in our capital, Jerusalem,” as he put it.
Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen also announced the summoning of his country’s ambassador to Madrid for consultations.
Two Hamas gunmen killed three people at a bus station in Jerusalem during the morning rush hour on Thursday.
On Thursday, Sanchez considered it “in the interest” of the European Union to recognize the Palestinian state, a step he said was necessary to put an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and for the stability of the region.
The Socialist Prime Minister affirmed in an interview with public broadcaster RETV, “It is clear that we have to find a political solution to end this crisis, and this solution includes, in my opinion, recognition of the Palestinian state.”
He explained that this recognition “is in Europe’s interest for a moral reason, because what we see in Gaza is unacceptable,” but also for a “geopolitical” reason because it contributes to the “stability” of the region.
