A team of researchers has successfully located a thriving deep-water coral ecosystem off the coast of Benin, sixty years after initial fishing surveys suggested the site might be a dead coral formation. The reef, situated more than 50 meters beneath the ocean surface, was identified as a mesophotic coral ecosystem—a habitat that exists in the dimly lit “twilight zone” where sunlight is significantly limited.
Rediscovered Ecosystem in the “Twilight Zone”
The rediscovery, which was published on July 19 in Scientific American, represents the first confirmed living mesophotic coral ecosystem recorded on the continental shelf of the Gulf of Guinea. Unlike shallow tropical reefs, this ecosystem does not form a single, continuous barrier. Instead, it consists of scattered patches of coral growing on rocky outcrops suitable for their development.
Overcoming Logistical and Financial Hurdles
The project was led by Gérard Zinzindohoué of the Benin Fisheries and Oceanological Research Institute. The effort to confirm the reef’s status faced significant challenges, including a lack of local research vessels and difficulties in securing equipment. Zinzindohoué, who serves as the project lead for Coral Reefs Rediscovering & Exploration in Benin, noted that a string of failed grant applications delayed the investigation for years.

In January 2025, the project received a $20,000 grant from Yale E360. These funds were largely consumed by the acquisition of sonar equipment, which nearly stalled when a European supplier refused payment from an African bank account. To complete the mission, the research team utilized a wooden pirogue to navigate the offshore swell while deploying a high-resolution deep-sea camera system provided by the National Geographic Exploration Technology Lab.
Biological Diversity and Future Research
Initial analysis of the footage captured by the camera system revealed a biologically diverse environment. The team documented at least eight species of fish, including golden African snappers and the Monrovia doctorfish. The coral community itself includes six types of soft coral and two varieties of black coral.

While the findings confirm the reef is alive, researchers have not yet been able to conduct direct coral sampling. Consequently, specific species identifications remain to be verified. Scientists also remain uncertain whether the reef has existed continuously since the 1960s or if it has experienced cycles of decline and recovery.

Zinzindohoué stated, according to Frontiers. He emphasized that this discovery likely indicates how little is currently known about coastal regions in West Africa and suggested that further undocumented reef systems may exist in the area.
Scientific Significance of the Site
The historical reports from the 1960s suggested the potential existence of a coral reef barrier extending roughly 40 kilometers parallel to the Benin coastline. The recent mission surveyed only a small portion of this area.
Zinzindohoué noted that because the site appears to be an undisturbed marine ecosystem, it holds significant potential for future scientific study. He indicated that the corals could eventually be used for carbon dating or paleoclimatic research to reconstruct past climate systems in the region.

Zinzindohoué said. Future expeditions are planned to determine the full extent of the reef and to conduct a formal scientific diving and sampling program.
