Search and rescue operations continue for 26 people reported missing after a ferry sank off the coast of Basilan province in the Philippines on Wednesday. The MV Trisha Kerstin 3 was carrying too many passengers and cargo, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
Ferry Sinking and Search Efforts
The ferry, owned by Aleson Shipping Lines, went down approximately 1.5 nautical miles from the shore of Maluso, Basilan. Authorities are currently conducting search and rescue operations, involving the coast guard, navy, and local fishermen.
As of Thursday, 26 individuals remain unaccounted for. The vessel was reportedly already tilted while docked at the port before it departed, according to a survivor’s account. The DOTr stated the ferry was authorized to carry only 198 passengers, but was carrying 253 passengers and an excess of cargo.
Investigations and Charges
The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has issued a show-cause order to Aleson Shipping Lines, requiring them to explain why they allowed the ferry to sail despite being overloaded. Several government executives and workers are facing potential charges in connection with the tragedy.
Government officials are moving to file administrative and criminal cases against those found responsible for the incident. The investigation will focus on potential violations of safety regulations and negligence.
The MV Trisha Kerstin 3 was en route from Zamboanga City to Maluso when it sank. The cause of the sinking is still under investigation, but the overloading and reported pre-departure tilt are key areas of focus.
