According to Shashi Tharoor, certain media outlets engaged in a combination of incompetence and malice by twisting his conversation with Rishabh Shah at India’s International Movement to Unite Nations in Mumbai on August 7.
To set the record straight, Shashi Tharoor shared the complete, unedited video of the session on X. “It takes a particular combination of incompetence and malice for some media to interpret my conversation with Rishabh Shah at @iimunofficial as an attack on my own party or its leadership,” Shashi Tharoor stated on X. His office also released a targeted clip emphasizing that political parties must proactively open doors for the younger generation.
Contrasting Opposition Strategies: Congress Campaigns Versus CJP Protests
The core of the discussion stems from Shashi Tharoor’s observation regarding how opposition groups connect with grassroots youth issues. During his appearance, Shashi Tharoor noted that opposition parties failed to provide a route into formal party structures for the exact demographic that demonstrated at Jantar Mantar last month. He agreed that Congress’s student outreach program did not resonate as strongly as the Cockroach Janata Party’s mass demonstrations against examination paper leaks.
At the same time, Shashi Tharoor credited Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi with launching the Chhatron ki goonj
campaign. According to available records, Rahul Gandhi initiated this student-focused initiative in Kota, Rajasthan, on June 17, addressing examination irregularities even before the CJP announced its mass protest on June 20. Rahul Gandhi subsequently expanded the campaign to Dehradun and other cities, holding parallel actions while protesters camped at Jantar Mantar ahead of Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation as the Union education minister.

Established political institutions face a stark choice regarding their long-term viability. As Shashi Tharoor remarked during the panel, traditional parties will lose relevance unless they learn to listen to new voices that have remained unheard until now. Posing a direct question about organizational introspection, Shashi Tharoor asked, “We need to ask ourselves what did we fail to do? Did we fail to listen? Was our finger missing from the pulse of the Gen Z?”
